SLEEPY HILLS PEDIATRICS
Project Description:
This second year studio project is a commercial healthcare facility based in Hamden, CT. Sleepy Hills Pediatrics uses biophilic attributes and location-based materials to create a design that connects patients and workers to the space. This beginning studio course is focused on programming and space planning in the context of specialized populations within healthcare environments. Emphasis is placed on two- and three-dimensional approaches to organizational and spatial problem solving and presentation methods.
RENDERINGS:

When walking into the pediatric office, the reception desk is directly to the left and waiting room straight ahead so that they are the first two things you see when you enter the facility and there is no confusion. The ADA compliant bathroom is also next to the waiting room so that patients are able to access it easily. The reception desk, work room, and nurse’s station all connect for easy communication between staff members.

Biophilic Attribute: Wayfinding Benefit: Clear Pathway This one-point perspective of the reception desk shows how the wayfinding wraps around the desk. The horizontal wood planks wrap around the bend of the desk and provide patients with a clear way to walk throughout the pediatric office.

CONCEPT:
The Pediatric Office’s goal is to use natures textures that you can find as you hike through Sleeping Giant State Park, which is in the same town the office resides in, Hamden. The use of these textural elements will create areas of interaction and connection as you go throughout the space that are very stimulating and engaging for children and adults. The textures from the raw nature is an indirect interaction with nature itself and can be both emotionally and intellectually satisfying for children and adults.

ELEVATIONS:

Biophilic Attribute: Wayfinding Benefit: Clear Pathway This elevation of the reception desk shows part of wayfinding throughout the space. The horizontal wood panels start at the reception desk and wrap around the curved front and then continue past the doorway and wraps all the way to the nurses station. Wayfinding reduces confusion and anxiety by helping give a clear pathway throughout a space.

Biophilic Attribute: Natural Materials Benefit: Indirect Experience with Nature This elevation of the waiting room shows a stone accent wall. The veneered slate stone gives visual and textural interest to the waiting room. The stone texture relates back to the natural materials that you would see while hiking at Sleeping Giant.

Biophilic Attribute: Natural Materials Benefit: Indirect Experience with Nature This elevation of the north wall in consultation room 2 shows an accent wall. The herringbone wood panels across the wall create a visual and textural interest to the room. The use of this natural material on the wall gives an indirect experience with nature and is very stimulating.

BIOPHILIC ATTRIBUTES:

Natural Materials:
An indirect experience with nature, and are the use of organic material, like wood and stone. These materials elicit postive visual and tactile responses, and are very stimulating.

Light:
A direct experience with nature, and natural light is fundamental to human health and wellbeing, enabling an orientation to the day, night, and seasons in response to the sun’s location and cycles.

Indigenous Materials:
Materials that are naturally and locally found in the specific
area.

Location Map
Hamden, Connecticut is nicknamed “The Land of the Sleeping Giant because of a geographic feature that lies inside the town. Sleeping Giant is a trap rock mountain with a highpoint of 740ft and consists of hiking trails and a viewpoint from the top. It received the name Sleeping Giant after a distinctive land feature that resembles a sleeping person, and it is visible for miles. In the landscaping of the pediatric office, there are a lot of native trees, shrubs, and bushes to create a closed off premises. The use of plants can help to reduce the stress of the patients before going into the doctors office, which can be a stressful experience for some children.
